Haute Maurienne Vanoise

Discover the Ibex

The ibex almost disappeared at the beginning of the 20th century, menaced by the overly intensive hunting of the times. In France, it was saved thanks to the creation of the Vanoise National Park in 1963.

In Haute Maurienne Vanoise, we are at the heart of the Vanoise National Park. It is thus very easy to observe these large mammals with horns measuring up to a meter and weighing up to six kilos!

How do you see one and recognize it?

They can be observed on rocky and often inaccessible sites. The male's summer fur is iron gray; in winter it darkens and becomes a deep brown. Females have light chestnut-colored fur.
