Discover the bearded vulture
Legend recounts that the bearded vulture was considered to be a ferocious, child-eating beast. This large bird of prey, formerly found throughout the Alps, was persecuted and disappeared during the 19th century.
It was re-introduced to the Alps during the past twenty years but remains a fragile creature.
The bearded vulture is also known as the "bone-breaker" because of its strange way of feeding: it breaks the bones of its prey by dropping it from on high against the rocks.
How do you recognize it?
It measures 150 cm and is bigger than the golden eagle. Adult bearded vultures have a white head and gray wings and tail.
