Discover the larch
The larch is a tree that can attain 20 to 45 meters of height and can live for 600 years. It can be recognized by its gray and red-brown bark. Its particularity? It loses all its needles in winter, an exception among conifers.
Of all resinous trees, the larch is the one with the most durable, most solid wood. Rot-proof, larch wood is widely used in construction.
Composed largely of larches, the forests of Haute Maurienne Vanoise contribute to the specificity of this high valley, to its character and charm.
The very slow growth of the larch has made it vulnerable. It is counted among the habitats to be protected at the European level.
How do you recognize it?
In autumn, the larch is easy to spot. It becomes covered with gold, its needles having taken on a yellow-orange color before falling to the ground. In spring, its young needles are a beautiful tender green. Its needles are very fine and very short.
