Discover the green alder
Since it requires quite a bit of water, the green alder generally grows close to a source of water or in avalanche corridors on northern slopes.
Commonly no bigger than a bush, it can nonetheless reach up to 3 or 4 meters of height. A pioneering plant, it helps consolidate the soil.
In winter, its flexible branches serve as the favorite refuge for numerous animals and resist the pressure of avalanches.
Its roots associate with soil bacteria to capture and fix nitrogen, thus favoring the nearby presence of nitrogen-loving plants.
Where do you see it and how do you recognize it?
It can be found at altitudes between 1500 and 2300 meters on northern slopes. Its bush-like appearance and its bright green, dentate leave help to identify it.
