Discover the arolla pine

The arolla pine is the typical pine of the Alps, a symbol of the high-mountain region. Thanks to its resistence to cold, snow and wind, it can be found both in Europe and in Asia at altitudes between 1200 and 2500 meters.

It longevity is exceptional. Certain trees can live over 600 years. The cones of the arolla pine contain big edible seeds, greatly favored by the nutcracker, who feeds almost exclusively on them. The nutcracker even collects a stock of seeds for the winter.

The slow growth of the arolla pine has made it vulnerable. It is counted among the habitats to be protected at a European level. Its wood is easy to work and very popular with sculptors and furniture makers.

 How do you recognize it?

The arolla pine can be identified by its greenish-blue needles, which are thick and grouped in bundles of five.
