Haute Maurienne Vanoise

Discover the golden eagle

This is the largest bird of prey than can be observed in Haute Maurienne. Its wingspread can attain 220 cm.

When it hunts, the golden eagle glides in wide circles for hours, carried on the warm air currents that allow it to rise higher and higher.

Thanks to excellent eyesight (seven times more penetrating that that of a human being), the eagle locates its prey from several hundred meters away before suddenly diving at it at a speed of over 160 km/h.

There are around twenty couples of eagles in the Vanoise area; they generally nest in inaccessible places at an altitude of 1900 meters.

 How do you recognize it?

The golden eagle can be recognized by its massive silhouette and the white spot that can be seen under each of its wings.
