Discover the bearded vulture
Legends tells us that the bearded vulture was considered to be a fierce creature who devoured children. This large bird of prey, formerly found throughout the Alps, was persecuted and disappeared during the 19th century.
It has been re-introduced in the Alps during the past twenty years but remains a fragile species.
The bearded vulture is also called the "bone-breaker" because of its very strange feeding technique: it breaks the bones of its prey by dropping it from a height against the rocks.
How do you recognize it?
The vulture measures 150 cm and is larger than the golden eagle. The adult bearded vulture has a white head and gray wings and tail.
